Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

Answer 2

Answer:

The two texts, "Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True" and "The Opportunity of a Lifetime," address voluntourism. The purpose of the first text, a speech to the student body of Evergreen High, is to discourage voluntourism and instead promote more genuine and effective ways to help others. The author emphasizes the negative impact voluntourism can have on local communities and argues that it is more harmful than helpful. The author also highlights the issues with voluntourism, such as that it perpetuates small-minded views of the world, takes jobs away from local workers, and can be an insincere and superficial experience.

On the other hand, the purpose of the second text, a magazine advertisement, is to promote voluntourism as a valuable opportunity. The author emphasizes the benefits of voluntourism, such as that it is a way to travel, experience different cultures, and help others. The title of the text, "The Opportunity of a Lifetime," conveys a sense of excitement and adventure. The text also makes the cost of voluntourism seem affordable and accessible, making it appealing to readers.

Both texts present different perspectives on voluntourism and use different language and images to achieve their respective purposes. The speech to the student body aims to discourage voluntourism and promote alternative ways to help, while the magazine advertisement aims to promote voluntourism as a desirable and valuable opportunity.

And every book I picked up had few sentences which didn't contain anywhere from one to nearly all the words that might as well have been in chinese. skipped those words, of course, I really ended up with little idea of what the book said . ... saw the best thing i could do was get hold of a dictionary - to study, to learn some words. I requested a dictionary along with some tablets and pencils from the Norfolk Prison Colony school. I spent two days just riffling uncertainly through the dictionary's pages. I'd never realized so many words existed! I didn't know which words I needed to learn. Finally, justte start some kind of action, began copying. In my slow, painstaking, ragged handwriting, I copied into my tablet everything printed on that tirst page, down to the punctuation marks. I believe it took me a day. Then, aloud, to myself, read my own handwriting. woke up the next morning, thinking about those words - immensely proud to realize that not only had I written so much at one time. but I'd written words that I never knew were in the world. Moreover, with a little effort, also could remember what many of these words meant. Treviewed the words whose meanings I didn't remember. Funny thing, from the dictionary's first page right now, that aardvark springs to my mind. The dictionary had a picture of it, a long-tailed, long-eared, burrowing African mammal, which lives off termites caught by sticking out its tongue as an anteater does for ants. I was so fascinated that I went on - I copied the dictionary's next page. And the same experience came when I studied that. With every succeeding page, I also learned of people and places and events from history. Actually, the dictionary is like a miniature encyclopedia. Finally, the dictionary's A section had filled a whole tablet - and I went on to the B's. That was the way I started copying what eventually became the entire dictionary. It went a lot faster after so much practice helped me to pick up handwriting speed. I suppose it was inevitable that as my word-base broadened, I could for the first time pick up a book andread end-now begin to understand what the book was saying. Answers

Answer:

often true men and women are different

Answer:

Explanation:

I can present the arguments for both sides of the debate.

Argument 1: Male education is better than female education

Proponent:

The proponents of this argument might argue that historically, men have had more opportunities for education and that this has resulted in better educational outcomes for men. They might point to data that shows that on average, men have higher levels of educational attainment, better grades, and higher graduation rates compared to women. They might also argue that cultural norms that encourage boys and men to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields have also contributed to better educational outcomes for men.

Argument 2: Female education is equal to or better than male education

Opponent:

Opponents of this argument might argue that while men have historically had more opportunities for education, this gap has been closing in recent years. They might point to data that shows that women are now completing more years of education, outperforming men in certain subject areas, and pursuing careers in male-dominated fields such as STEM. They might also argue that the benefits of educating women extend far beyond individual educational outcomes and include benefits for families, communities, and society as a whole. By investing in female education, we can help break down gender-based barriers to education and employment, and ensure that all individuals have the same opportunities for success.

In conclusion, both arguments have valid points and there is no clear winner in the debate. It is important to recognize that education is a complex and multi-faceted issue that affects individuals and communities in many different ways. Both men and women have unique strengths and challenges when it comes to education, and it is important to support and invest in education for all individuals, regardless of gender.

What does the term "unmechanical" most likely mean as used in paragraph 95, paragraph 105, and
paragraph 249? Cite evidence in your answer.

Answers

The repeated use of the word "unmechanical" throughout the story implies the dominant position and complete control held by "the Machine" in maintaining order in the world.

Everything must conform to the dictates of "the Machine," rather than the preferences of the citizens or anyone else.

The Machine Stops

E.M. Forster's science fiction story "The Machine Stops" is set in a future world where humans reside underground and are ruled by machines. The story explores life in a society where machines hold the power over humans.

The two main characters, Vashti and her son Kuno, embody two different perspectives within the mechanized world. While Vashti is satisfied with her life, Kuno is a rebel who despises everything about the mechanical world. The new rule that everyone must worship "the Machine" is emphasized by the repeated use of the term "unmechanical," which implies the unethical or unreligious nature of those who refuse to worship the machine, the deity of this mechanized society.

For instance, in paragraph 95, the pursuit of knowledge that was once used to advance civilization is now deemed "illegal" and "unmechanical," resulting in punishment by homelessness. Paragraph 105 highlights the use of "unmechanical" names for continents, emphasizing how everything has been absorbed and dominated by "the Machine" and how all other aspects of humanity have been forgotten or banned.

In paragraph 249, the act of asking "Have others complained?" is considered "unmechanical" by the Committee of the Mending Apparatus, who refuse to answer the question posed by a citizen. This highlights the Machine's monopoly on authority and the fact that it does things its own way, without regard for the opinions or desires of the citizens.

The two statements that describe hos the pace impacts tension in the story "The Necklace" are options B and D, as seen below:

B. A fast pace at the beginning builds tension around the missing necklace.D. A slow pace in the middle eases tension as readers learn about Madame Loisel's difficult life.

What is pace?

When it comes to literature, pace can be defined as the speed with which things happen in the story. In "The Necklace," author Guy de Maupassant changes the pace depending on what is happening to the main character.

For instance, when Madame Loisel loses the necklace she borrowed from her friend, the pace is fast. Perhaps the author wants to make readers feel as tense and anxious about it as the character herself. On the other hand, when Madame Loisel has to work for ten years to pay for the new necklace she bought, the pace is made slower. Here, the author might want to have readers feel the difficulties the woman has had to gone through for a very long time.
