    The Island of Hawaii will be carried beyond the hotspot by plate motion as the Pacific Plate continues to move in a west-northwest direction, creating the conditions for the development of a new volcanic island in its stead. This procedure may already be in motion. A submerged volcano called Loihi Seamount is currently forming about 35 kilometers off the southeast coast of Hawaii. Loihi has already risen from the ocean floor to within 1 km of the surface, a distance of around 3 km. The hotspot theory predicts that if Loihi keeps expanding, it will eventually become the next island in the Hawaiian chain.
