Answer 1

In modern United States of America, they do not punish for immoral behavior, they have judicial system that addresses illegal behavior but according to them illegal and immoral acts are not the same thing.

Dante’s punishments would definitely be considered as cruel and unusual by modern American standards because according to modern American standards, the behavior that breaks the law can be punished and these punishments must not be of cruel and unusual nature.

Today, we punish immoral (not illegal) behavior by public shaming. For example, a woman who has been cheated on will often take to social media to publicly shame her husband. So, it should be noted that public shaming might be considered as cruel and unusual, Dante might have approved it.

So, we may conclude that Dante’s ideas about Justice were different from the ideas about justice of modern America.
