The majority of court reporters, including myself, have encountered that query dozens, if not hundreds of times throughout the course of our careers. The people who typically ask this at depositions from our steno machines are witnesses, along with variations like "Is that shorthand?" "I don't know how you type on that little thing," I said. And the classic question of every court reporter, "Now, did you go to school for that?"

Of course, I also explain as succinctly as I can how I manage to work my steno machine, as do probably most of us.
